A potential update has emerged regarding plans for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at next month’s WrestleMania 42 event.
Earlier this month on WWE Raw, Penta defeated Dominik Mysterio to win the Intercontinental Title.
Since then, Penta has retained the title in matches against El Grande Americano and most recently Dragon Lee.
Now, it looks like his next challenger could be coming from AAA.
During tonight’s WWE AAA Rey De Reyes night two show, El Ojo (The Eye) were backstage with El Hijo Del Vikingo frustrated after Mini Vikingo cost him the AAA Mega Championship against Dominik Mysterio last week.
Dorian Roldan told Vikingo to stop obsessing over that loss and Mini Vikingo, and instead shift focus to Penta’s WWE Intercontinental Title.
Roldan said:
“‘Mini Vikingo, Mini Vikingo’ – let it go. This isn’t your style. You’re destined to do bigger things.
“Imagine this… WrestleMania weekend, ok? Intercontinental Champion.
“You are El Hijo Del Vikingo, understand that. You were born to do big things. You were born to be the greatest luchador in Mexico. We cannot be wasting time.
“Today, you have the biggest opportunity to go out there and challenge Penta.
“I have trust in you. Trust that we will do big things. Trust in El Ojo.
“And we are here to always be the best Vikingo. You must take that into account, okay?”

El Ojo is the group made up of Vikingo, Roldan and WWE star Omos, who have been among the top heels in AAA since the WWE takeover of the brand.
It has been announced that Vikingo will confront Penta during next week’s AAA Rey De Reyes show, which will be the third of the three weeks of Rey De Reyes that were all taped together.
Could Penta Vs. El Hijo Del Vikingo Take Place At WrestleMania 42?
At this point, a match between Penta and El Hijo Del Vikingo for the WWE Intercontinental Championship seems inevitable.
The question is whether the match takes place at WrestleMania itself, or beforehand, as it wasn’t clear from Roldan’s comments.
He may have been referring to Vikingo challenging Penta at WrestleMania, or he may have been saying Vikingo could walk into Mania weekend as champion if he wins the title before then.
Ultimately, if WWE does want a AAA presence at WrestleMania to showcase the brand, this could be the perfect way to do it, although there remain plenty of viable challengers for Penta on Raw who may have to miss out if the title match goes to Vikingo instead.
Alternatively, WWE could hold a multi-man match, with Vikingo being one of the challengers but the rest being made up of names from the Raw roster.
