WWE United States Champion Trick Williams has opened up on why he believes WWE fans chose him over Sami Zayn in their ongoing rivalry.
Trick Williams captured his first WWE main roster championship back at WrestleMania 42, when he defeated Sami Zayn to win the United States Championship.
Over the course of their rivalry, the WWE fans have begun to be more negative towards Sami, favouring Trick, with the two of them undergoing a double turn in the process.
Speaking to Joe Tessitore in a WWE Backlash Countdown, Trick Williams was asked why he believes WWE fans chose him over Sami after supporting Sami for so long.
He said:
“Sami made my job easy. Hating is never a good look. Since day one Sami didn’t believe I belonged on SmackDown. He even told me ‘you know that Whoop That thing you do? Don’t be surprised if they don’t know that up here. This is the big leagues, this isn’t NXT. I’ve been doing this for 20 years Trick, it takes a long time to have a resume like mine’.
“The problem with that is, if you sleep on your opponent, no matter who you think they are, you can get woken up, and that’s exactly what happened. He slept on Trick Williams. He doesn’t think that Trick Williams belongs.
“Trick Williams doesn’t know the accolades of his favourite wrestler from 1942 when the business was still in the circus and they were still putting marks on people’s hands. Trick Williams doesn’t know that answer, but Trick Williams knows how to grind, and that’s what Sami Zayn should have been paying attention to.
“I’m willing to put the work in, I just told you my testimony, I walked on, I wasn’t invited. Sami Zayn didn’t invite me either, and that’s why I’m here.”

Next United States Championship Challenger For Trick Williams
With Trick Williams set to face Sami Zayn once again at Backlash, many expect Trick to once again emerge victorious to end his ongoing rivalry with Sami.
Coming out of Backlash, there are a number of potential candidates to face Trick for the United States Championship, the most obvious being his former ally Carmelo Hayes, who lost the title to Sami prior to WrestleMania, and has yet to get his rematch for the belt.
On top of Hayes, other new faces to the SmackDown roster including Royce Keys and Ricky Saints could be in line for the next title shot, as well as other stars like Ilja Dragunov, who gave Trick Williams arguably his greatest matches of his career in NXT.
