A former champion has voiced his displeasure at WWE’s decision to have Carmelo Hayes lose his United States Championship during the March 27 episode of SmackDown.
In what was his ninth televised title defense, and 15th overall, Carmelo Hayes once again put his gold on the line in an open challenge – this time answered by former WWE United States Champion Sami Zayn.
Zayn, who is responsible for bringing back the US Title Open Challenge back in September, looked to earn his way onto the WrestleMania 42 card after being told earlier in the night by SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis that there were no spots available for him on the card in Las Vegas.
And that’s exactly what he did, as Zayn capitalized on Trick Williams inadvertently striking Hayes when he was aiming for Zayn, leading to Zayn hitting a Helluva Kick on Melo for the win.
As confirmed by Nick Aldis after Zayn’s win, the new US Champion will now defend his gold against Trick Williams at WrestleMania 42 – while Hayes is seemingly left with no plans at “The Grandest Stage of Them All.”
Former WWE United States Champion Bishop Dyer Calls For WrestleMania 42 Title Match Change
Many fans have reacted negatively to Sami Zayn’s title win across WWE’s channels, with many of the top voted comments in the YouTube highlights of the match calling out the decision.
This was also the case on Twitter, with Triple H’s post hyping up Sami Zayn vs. Trick Williams being bombarded with negative reactions who believe Hayes deserved to take the United States Title into WrestleMania 42.
One former WWE star who also wasn’t shy about voicing his displeasure was Bishop Dyer (fka Baron Corbin), with the former WWE US Champion called for Carmelo Hayes to be added to Zayn and Williams’ Wrestlemania 42 match.
Taking to Twitter, he wrote:
Make it a 3 way!!
@Carmelo_WWE has carrried that for months and has delivered!!
Dyer then continued with another post, stating that Carmelo Hayes was “screwed,” with he and Ilja Dragunov helping make the US Title “matter again” in recent months:
Just my opinion but @Carmelo_WWE got screwed. He deserves a mania match!!
Him and Ilja made that title matter again! S**t give me Ilja vs @_trickwilliams vs Melo at mania
How WWE Can Appease Carmelo Hayes’ Fans Before WrestleMania 42
Given that Carmelo Hayes has stolen the show almost every week on SmackDown throughout his 98 day WWE United States Title reign, he certainly did do more than enough to earn the right to take the gold into WrestleMania 42.
While it may not be the same as walking in champion, it seems like there’s a chance WWE may rectify the situation by adding Hayes, and potentially other stars into the Sami Zayn vs. Trick Williams WrestleMania 42 match.
Hayes being screwed over by Trick on SmackDown gives him a valid reason to pay Nick Aldis a visit and demand a rematch, whether he has to earn it or not.
There’s also the likes of Ilja Dragunov, who has been heavily involved in the US Title for months and could re-enter the fray given his lack of WrestleMania 42 options elsewhere.
Tama Tonga is another name who could finally step up as well, with Hayes even imploring The MFT member to take his shot at the US Title in last night’s open challenge before Zayn eventually answered it.
