After nineteen days of competition, former AEW International Champion Konosuke Takeshita has won the G1 Climax 35 tournament.
The G1 Climax is the premier tournament in all of pro wrestling in NJPW where 20 competitors do battle in a two block round-robin format to determine who is the best wrestler.
With past winners like Masahiro Chono, Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kenny Omega, victory in the G1 goes to a very prestigious group of stars in the history of New Japan.
On August 17, Takeshita faced EVIL in the G1 Climax 35 Tournament Finals. The match started in typical fashion that most EVIL matches go with interference and shenanigans.
After Rocky Romero, the Young Lions and Zack Sabre Jr. dispatched of every member of House of Torture, the bout picked up in intensity and drama.
With a split crowd cheering for both men in Ariake Arena, it was Takeshita who pulled out a miraculous win over EVIL with the Raging Fire.
This win marks the first time an AEW signed talent has won the G1 Climax tournament. Takeshita also set the record for the most accumulative in-ring time in a single tournament in G1 history.
Takeshita now has a guaranteed shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, which normally would happen at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 in January.
However, it seems like “The Alpha” has teased following in current champion Sabre Jr.’s footsteps and take his shot early at one of the upcoming major shows.
WrestleTalk will provide any further updates on the upcoming title match when they become available.
