News has emerged that an AEW star will be leaving the promotion and going on to sign with WWE some time in the near future.
A number of weeks ago, there were reports out that WWE was looking to bolster its tag team divisions after the recent round of releases saw a lot of tag teams being let go or disbanded.
One of the teams that was reportedly set to join WWE as part of this rebuild was the returning Enzo Amore and Big Cass, who were with the company in NXT for a few years in the 2010s and then on the main roster together for about a year before they split up in 2017.
In recent years, Big Cass has been working in AEW as Big Bill, while Amore has been working on the indies.
Now, Fightful Select reports that Big Bill has officially given his notice to AEW that he will be leaving the promotion when his contract expires in the next week.
There are plans in place for him to return to WWE, along with the company signing Enzo Amore and reuniting them as a tag team.
Amore has been available, but as of a couple of weeks ago, hadn’t been signed to a deal because WWE wanted to hold off and make sure Cass was coming in as well.
Essentially, WWE didn’t want to sign Amore and then find itself in a situation where Big Cass wouldn’t be able to sign, so WWE would have ended up with Amore and not Cass for however long – the company wanted to make sure it could bring them both in together.
How Will Enzo Amore & Big Cass Fit In Current WWE?
Enzo Amore and Big Cass became incredibly popular in NXT and in their early days on the WWE main roster, but Vince McMahon split them up in an attempt to push Big Cass as a singles star, which didn’t pan out for numerous reasons.
Cass had a lot of personal issues at the time which he’s since overcome and he’s now in a much better position to succeed, which he has done in AEW over the past couple of years including a Tag Team Title reign with Ricky Saints (Starks).
The question is how will Amore and Cass fit in the current landscape a decade on from their peak – no doubt there’ll be some buzz when they return, but the question is how it’ll sustain over time.
They’ll also be under pressure to perform in the ring to modern day standards, but signs have been good on that front from Cass’ AEW run.
