A top WWE target has now won a championship in another promotion, following uncertainty surrounding his status.

Fightful originally reported on March 13 that Jeff Cobb – who was referred to in the report as a free agent – is a star WWE had their eye on, with one source indicating that Cobb had appeared on WWE’s internal roster, which Fightful couldn’t confirm.

A later report from Dave Meltzer indicated that there have been contract talks between Cobb and WWE, with no confirmation of a deal.

While Cobb had indicated that he intended to stay with NJPW, the former Olympian losing in the New Japan Cup quarterfinals fuelled rumors that his departure was imminent.

This hasn’t been the case, with Cobb now picking up some new hardware within NJPW.

Jeff Cobb and Callum Newman of the United Empire are now IWGP Tag Team Champions, winning the gold at the April 5 Sakura Genesis event.

Cobb and Newman defeated now-former champions Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takahashi to win the gold in just under 11 minutes.

This marks Cobb’s third reign with the IWGP Tag Team Championship, following two short reigns in 2022.
