A WWE star’s injury is potentially a “serious” one, according to a new backstage update.

This past Tuesday, on the June 30 episode of NXT, AAA Latin American Champion El Hijo del Vikingo was set to defend his championship against EK Prosper, but instead the match was canceled due to Vikingo suffering an injury during rehearsals.

WWE shot an angle in which Keanu Carver laid Vikingo out backstage to explain the match’s cancellation, and a follow up report revealed that the injury was to the AAA star’s knee, with WWE awaiting MRI results to find out the severity of the issue.

In a new update from Wrestling Observer Radio, both Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez indicated that Vikingo’s injury is, unfortunately, looking likely to be serious.

Meltzer said:

“I heard by the way, this weekend, it could be serious.”

Alvarez would then comment:

“Yeah, it doesn’t sound good.”

While he was written off during Tuesday’s WWE NXT, Vikingo was in action during the Friday, July 3 episode of SmackDown, as that show was taped on June 29 in Atlantic City.

The match saw Vikingo unsuccessfully challenge Rey Fenix for the AAA Cruiserweight Championship, however, it was an impressive WWE main roster debut match for the 29-year-old – who is reportedly under a WWE contract, unlike others on the AAA roster.

An Unfortunate Setback For A Star On The Rise

While El Hijo del Vikingo was not embraced as the top babyface WWE initially wanted him to be when they purchased AAA, he has since flourished in a heel role alongside his El Ojo faction with Omos and Dorian Roldan.

If his injury if in fact a serious one, Vikingo’s absence will be felt in AAA and the first action they’d likely have to take is crown a brand new AAA Latin American Champion, a disappointment given that he’s only just over a month into his first run with the gold.

Given how much he and Rey Fenix impressed on SmackDown also, it also wouldn’t have been a surprise to see WWE call upon Vikingo to appear across Raw, SmackDown and NXT more often after this week.

Hopefully, these opportunities lost will still be available to Vikingo when he returns to action, as AAA is far stronger when he’s around.
