There were title changes in the main events of all three weekly WWE shows this week, capped off with tonight’s March 7 episode of SmackDown.
Earlier this week, IYO SKY won the Women’s World Championship from Rhea Ripley in the main event of WWE Raw on Netflix.
The very next night on NXT, Shawn Spears won the NXT North American Championship, dethroning Tony D’Angelo.
And now later in the very same week, it was SmackDown’s turn as LA Knight is now a two-time WWE United States Champion.
Tonight’s main event saw Shinsuke Nakamura defend the US Title against Knight, after Knight won a qualifying tournament last week.
This match was actually supposed to happen last week, but Nakamura was given the night off following the passing of former IWGP Tag Team Champion Osamu Nishimura, who Nakamura described as being like a brother.
The Knight vs Nakamura match ended up taking place tonight instead, with Knight scoring the win and winning the championship back from the man who previously beat him for it.
The finish came after Nakamura blew mist into referee Charles Robinson’s face, taking him out of the match.
When Nakamura tried to use a steel chair because the referee was down, Knight countered and landed his BFT finisher onto the chair, with a new referee coming out to the ring and counting the pinfall.
Nakamura had won the title from Knight at WWE Survivor Series last November, and hadn’t actually had any title defenses since then until tonight.
