The show saw plenty of fall out from the events of last night’s SmackDown, as GUNTHER, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn all angle for a shot at Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk.

Speaking of Punk, the ‘Best in the World’ headlined the taping with a surprise defense of his WWE Championship, with a major announcement regarding the title also being made for the September 11 WWE SmackDown in Mexico City.

Elsewhere in the show we saw the debut of WWE’s newest tag team, the latest potential indication of Chelsea Green’s first challenger as Interim WWE Women’s Champion and more.

Much like the August 28 episode, the September 4 WWE SmackDown began with a talking segment involving the potential next challengers for CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship, only this time Sami Zayn was involved, alongside GUNTHER, Finn Balor and Kevin Owens.

While all four men – as well as Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton – have their eyes on the Undisputed WWE Title, CM Punk instead opted to grant a championship opportunity to an unexpected name: Johnny Gargano.

Gargano has been laid out for months backstage; refusing to communicate, or compete inside the ring, but given SmackDown took place in Gargano’s hometown of Cleveland, Punk gave ‘Johnny Wrestling’ the chance to make his big comeback.

Punk did eventually successfully retain his WWE Title against Gargano in the show’s main event, but after more interjection from Sami Zayn in the post-match, Punk challenged Zayn to a rematch for the gold at the September 11 episode of WWE SmackDown in Mexico City.

Elsewhere on the show, Bakusai – the newly formed team of Kyoki (Hiromu Takahashi) and Shinsuke Nakamura – made their in-ring debut, defeating The Miz and Kit Wilson.

We also saw Nia Jax pick up another big win, as she appears to be set to become Chelsea Green’s first challenger as Interim WWE Women’s Champion.
