An update has emerged on the status of former WWE SmackDown co-head writer ‘Road Dogg’ Brian James and his TNA Wrestling status.

It was previously reported that the ‘Road Dogg’ Bria James had been in talks to sign with TNA Wrestling, with the deal being “99% there“.

With TNA Slammiversary now in the record books, the WWE Hall of Famer was reportedly backstage at the June 28 pay-per-view.

This week, TV tapings for Impact and Xplosion took place in Albany, New York, with PWInsider reporting that James was not in attendance in any capacity.

The report goes on to note that both parties are “still working out a deal”, with progress being made on the discussions.

Slammiversary also saw Nic Nemeth win the TNA Championship from Nic Nemeth, with it being reported that the latter is now done with the company following his contract expiring.

James would be joining TNA Wrestling after the departure of Tommy Dreamer, who served as a member of the creative team from early 2019, having also been a producer.

Working For the Partner Company

A move to TNA Wrestling would come off the back of Road Dogg leaving WWE having been left “unhappy” by his annual review.

A former backstage producer who rose to Senior Vice President of Live Events and later becoming co-head writer of SmackDown, James has such a broad skillset that it’s difficult to see him not finding a position behind-the-scenes in any televised company, and TNA Wrestling certainly has the opening with the recent departure of Dreamer.

The Hall of Famer may no longer be under the employment of WWE, but Figure Four Online notes that he remains under a Legends contract with the company.

WWE is also currently in an ongoing long-term partnership with TNA Wrestling, with crossovers between Impact and NXT, along with their associated pay-per-view/Premium Live Events. Assuming James does indeed sign with TNA Wrestling, he will no doubt be working closely with those in NXT creative to further realize that relationship.

Beyond his various backstage roles, Road Dogg is perhaps best remembered as a member of the New Age Outlaws, alongside “Bad Ass” Billy Gunn, with the pair going on to join D-Generation X, with that faction inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019.
