WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event recently took place, with John Cena’s retirement match topping the card, but that wasn’t always the plan.
The December 13 special saw John Cena lose his retirement match to GUNTHER at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
With the rest of the show being made up of exhibition matches between main roster and NXT stars, the show opened with Cody Rhodes vs Oba Femi in a Champion vs. Champion match.
It has now been revealed that early plans would have seen Rhodes take on Femi in the main event, according to Dave Meltzer.
Meltzer revealed the details in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, writing:
“There was a match order in place where Cody Rhodes vs. Oba Femi was listed last. That would have been a huge mistake.”
With Drew McIntyre having cost Femi and Rhodes a definitive result through his interference, the NXT Champion has set his sights on the main roster star.
In post-show comments, Triple H reflected on the presence of NXT stars (and Leon Slater, the TNA Wrestling X Division Champion) on a main roster show, stating, “you’re gonna see a future that is taking place right now.”
