WWE Champion Cody Rhodes has revealed he had an unreported outburst in the build to WrestleMania 42 in April.
The build to the night one main event of WrestleMania 42 this year will go down as one of the craziest stories of the year, with a lot of behind the scenes movement at work.
Cody Rhodes was to defend the WWE Championship against Randy Orton in the night one main event of the show, a match many fans had been waiting for since Cody’s return to WWE, due to their almost 20 years of history.
However, TKO and Ari Emanuel ended up adding Pat McAfee to the show’s build in Randy Orton’s corner, with the idea being to help boost ticket sales for the event.
The storyline also featured involvement from Jelly Roll, who took McAfee out of the match early on, allowing Cody and Randy to wrestle by themselves, before McAfee would return for the match’s ending, where he took an RKO from Randy Orton.
Cody Rhodes Explains Why He Was Proud Of How He Handled WrestleMania 42
Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, Cody opened up on the build to the match, and why he was ‘proud’ of how he handled it.
He said:
“I hope wrestling fans can understand that behind the scenes for me, it was probably the most proud I’d ever been with how I dealt with anything. It was probably the most calm I had been on the day, and it was probably the most calm I’d ever been leaving the ring.
“Because there were a lot of new factors. Companies change, directives change, that’s part of every type of entertainment, and I really wanted to take a page out of guys who have been mentors for me. It thought a lot about my dad and a lot about Hunter and how they would deal with something that was unique.
“You’re wrestling the guy you’ve got 20 years of history with, but here’s this unbelievably bold Pat McAfee character with such a crossover appeal and doing great on ESPN, then there’s Jelly Roll coming off winning Grammys. I just wanted to make it work for the night and for everyone to feel we had given them our best efforts. Internally I was so proud, because you were dealing with a lot of big names, and potentially big egos, and I wanted to do right by the people that raised me in the business and I’m gonna make this work, not just make it work, make it sing if I can.”

Cody Rhodes Reveals Unreported Backstage Outburst Prior To WrestleMania 42
Cody was then asked by Helwani if there was anything from the build to the match that he regrets.
Cody would reveal that he had a backstage outburst during the build to WrestleMania that had not previously been reported on.
He added:
“I had a bit of an outburst backstage which shockingly didn’t get reported, and I knew when I got to my bus, and when I say outburst it was me muttering some curse words on the Christmas story, yelling and knocking over water bottles, nothing too intense.
“But I remember getting to my bus and thinking ‘yeah, you outgrew that’. If you want a job in the wrestling space, nobody has a harder job than Triple H right now. There has never been a booker in the history of the business that has been beloved and revered the entire time, nobody has a harder job and nobody can do it better than he can do it, and it’s obviously something that interests me too.
“So I imagine thinking when I got to the bust that I’d outgrown that. I don’t need to be having temper tantrums, I need to be providing solutions.
“I’m not going to tell you (what caused it), you’ll get me in trouble. It’s probably such a non-factor, I think it was an F-bomb being dropped in the ring, because I am genuinely a goody-two-shoes, and there’s really no room for those on our show, because we get blacked out. Not only do you think you’re saying something cool, but they black the feed out in the States, so you’re missing the show.
“And you’ve got kids in the crowd. Their first experience with the F-word doesn’t need to come at a WWE show.”
