Yet to make her WWE SmackDown debut, Blake Monroe already has her eye on the John Cena Classic, along with Tatum Paxley and Kendal Grey.

Following teases since the April 24 SmackDown episode that Blake Monroe is coming, the former NXT Women’s North American Champion has yet to debut on the blue brand, although she recently shared the possibility of making her first appearance in Spain later this month.

Talking to Vicente Beltrán, Monroe would also look towards a spot in the recently announced John Cena Classic, saying:

“Of course I want to be a part of it. It seems like it’s going to be a huge tournament, and obviously, you have to headline that with a huge name like The Glamour, Blake Monroe.

“In terms of who I want to face, I just escaped the women in NXT. They were haunting me, but we have so many talented girls. I’d love to face Tatum (Paxley) again because we have unfinished business after she put me in a casket. You have Kendal Grey, you have a ton of new European signings, so I would love to be a part of it.

“If I’m not, I’m going to love watching it because I think it’s going to be really interesting to see how these people collide, because everybody comes from different places.”

The John Cena Classic was announced by the star himself at WWE Backlash, although later reporting has revealed that the format of the project is still largely undecided.

Who Wins? The Fans Decide

The fans will have a voice in the John Cena Classic, with the crowning of the inaugural champion not dependent on a victory but on a vote.

How this will be executed is still, very much like the format itself, an unknown quantity, although the direction suggests that there will be a champion from the men’s and women’s matches, featuring main roster vs. NXT stars.

Cena has been at the heart of this strategy previously, with his final match taking place at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13 last year, with his main event loss to GUNTHER being preceded by three matches that pitched main roster stars against their NXT counterparts. With Oba Femi, Sol Ruca, and Je’Von Evans all having moved up to the main roster, there’s potential for the John Cena Classic to do more than just give fans a say in who wins a shiny new title.

The John Cena Classic follows a tradition in WWE, with NXT hosting the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic between 2015 and 2024, while The Mae Young Classic ran for just two years, in 2017 and 2018. Both those tournaments have set many stars on a road to success, and it’s no doubt hoped that Cena’s legacy can carry participants to new heights.

Cena has also stated that the event “might be a total failure“, but noted the rationale behind the decision when it comes to his values and beliefs.

With details still expected to emerge in the near future, along with who will be competing from the main roster and NXT, the John Cena Classic is likely to be talked about for years to come, regardless of the outcome.
