WWE star AJ Styles is now confirmed to be making his return to TNA Wrestling at this Sunday’s Slammiversary pay-per-view.
Styles is one of the names most closely associated with TNA throughout the promotion’s history, having made his name during his time with the company and picking up five World Championships, six X-Division Championships, two TV Championships and six Tag Team Championships.
In recent weeks, speculation emerged about Styles potentially making a return to TNA, which picked up even more when the promotion’s president Carlos Silva teased that Slammiversary would be a “phenomenal” show.
During tonight’s TNA Impact, the last episode before Slammiversary, the show closed with a video that confirmed Styles is planned for the pay-per-view.
The video showed some brief highlights of Styles’ TNA run, and then a wooden chest/crate opened to reveal his ring entrance jacket inside, before showing the Slammiversary logo on-screen.
It’s unknown exactly what Styles will be doing at Slammiversary, but on WWE TV recently, he’s been building to an Intercontinental Championship match against Dominik Mysterio that looks set to take place at SummerSlam after being postponed from Night of Champions due to a Mysterio injury.
Styles recently said he’d previously been offered a spot in TNA Wrestling’s Hall of Fame, but didn’t want to be inducted while still an active wrestler for WWE.
On today’s Wrestling Observer Live, Lance Storm commented on Styles and his importance to TNA, saying:
“I think it could be said that TNA might not even exist without AJ Styles. That dude was the backbone of this company for years. He made his name in TNA, but he made TNA’s name as well.
“The dude was so great – is so great, but I’m referring to his time in TNA – was just fantastic, phenomenal, whatever choice of words you wanna use.
“I was fortunate enough, I actually wrestled him one time on a (1PW) show in the UK, a tag team match and had a lot of fun. The dude’s just fantastic in the ring.”
Slammiversary will have a heavy WWE presence with numerous NXT stars involved, including Trick Williams defending the TNA World Championship against Joe Hendry and Mike Santana in a three-way main event.
Also, NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne will face TNA Knockouts Champion Masha Slamovich in a title vs title match.
And as confirmed tonight, NXT’s DarkState faction will face Matt Cardona, Brian Myers, Eddie Edwards and JDC in an eight-man tag.
