With a debut match in the bag over the past weekend, the son of WWE Hall of Famer AJ Styles has filed a trademark for his in-ring name.

At Squared Circle Action on June 26, Avery Jones debuted as a professional wrestling, taking on Ashton Martin at the Freedom Fling event in Royston, Georgia.

Avery is the son of WWE Hall of Famer AJ Styles, who was also in attendance at the independent wrestling event.

The young Styles would win the match via a move very familiar to fans of the legendary father, with the WWE Hall of Famer going on to deliver the three count.

Under his real name of Avery Jones, the young star has now filed a trademark application for his ring name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office under serial number 99911939.

The application covers two separate Goods and Services categories, one of which is merchandise related, while the other covers the entertainment aspects, as described:

Like Father, Like Son

Following in the footsteps of a star the caliber of AJ Styles has to be quite a daunting task for his real-life son.

For Avery Styles to debut on the independent wrestling scene, eyes were bound to be on him from the very moment that announcement was made and it appears that he acquitted himself well in his first ever professional wrestling match.

Speaking on his Phenomenally Retro Podcast, Styles reflected on witnessing his son’s match, praising both young stars who featured, saying:

“It was a big day. Avery, my second oldest, had his first match, his debut match. And it got to be so big that it went from being semi-main event to the main event of the show. And I don’t think they disappointed anyone whatsoever. Ashton Martin, Avery Styles, it was a main event.

Listen, I’ve never been so impressed with two young guys. I think Ashton’s maybe a year, year and a half in. And then of course, this is Avery’s debut match. And there’s a lot of things that we do with all this energy when we have that young energy that we use it in the wrong way. They used it really, really well. They didn’t rush through anything. They took their time on things they should have. And listen, it’s not going to be perfect, but this is a debut match for Avery and Ashton hadn’t had that many matches. So to see them do so well in a main event, both of them, I was blown away.”

The WWE Hall of Famer would compare it this own first match, describing that as “terrible”, reiterating that he was “blown away” by the showing for his son and Ashton Martin.

No doubt, just from name value alone, Avery Styles will attract the interest of bigger companies, with the potential of a WWE contract at some point in his future, but perhaps an ideal path would be to get the “reps in” on the independent wrestling scene before making a commitment to a deal elsewhere.

Being the son of AJ Styles, he’s got a solid grounding in the world of independent wrestling, domestically and internationally, and can no doubt rely on his father to share insight into when and where the best opportunities to develop are.
