Scrapped plans for AJ Styles’ TNA return at last night’s Slammiversary pay-per-view event have been revealed.
AJ Styles made his long awaited return to TNA at last night’s Slammiversary pay-per-view event, his first appearance for the company since the partnership between WWE and TNA began last year.
Styles appeared after Leon Slater’s X Division Championship victory over Moose, with AJ putting over Slater after his victory.
Prior to the show, TNA’s Frankie Kazarian had been speaking about Styles’ upcoming appearance at Slammiversary, seemingly teasing a potential segment between the two, which didn’t end up happening.
However, Jon Alba of Sports Illustrated has provided more information on Styles’ TNA return appearance at Slammiversary.
Per Alba, multiple TNA sources had relayed prior to the show that Styles was expected to be in a segment with Kazarian, but plans shifted in the hours before the event.
Despite the change of plans, TNA President Carlos Silva noted to Sports Illustrated today that, while creative plans for AJ on the show changed a few times in the lead up to the event, the original plan was always to celebrate AJ’s X Division history.
Leon Slater has since confirmed on social media that he himself was unaware that Styles would be in a segment with him on the show.
In addition, TNA sources are of the belief that WWE may have had some say in not wanting to promise a future match in TNA for AJ that they weren’t going to deliver on, as no main roster WWE talent has worked a TNA match since the beginning of the partnership.
Styles is seemingly set for a future Intercontinental Championship clash with Dominik Mysterio at SummerSlam.
