Sami Zayn has addressed his United States Championship match with John Cena on the September 5 episode of SmackDown in Chicago, IL.
In the very same arena he made his WWE TV debut in, John Cena delivered a thank you message to the fans for all the memories on the show over the last 23 years, in what was his last ever appearance on the blue brand.
Cena was then greeted by new United States Champion Sami Zayn, who asked for permission from WWE’s “Greatest of All Time” to bring back the United States Championship Open Challenge – something Cena popularised during his run with the title back in 2015 – before challenging John to an impromptu match for the title there and then in Chicago.
Coming a decade after Cena and Zayn’s first match on the May 4, 2015 episode of Raw – which came about due to Cena issuing his own US Title open challenge – the moment appeared to be a special one for the Canadian star, with that reflected in his recent comment on the match via social media.
Posting to Twitter, Zayn shared an image of his handshake with Cena both after their 2015 match and before their bout on SmackDown, along with the caption:
Ten years. Full circle.
The match between Cena and Zayn ended in a disqualification as Brock Lesnar made his return to lay out both Zayn and Cena with an F-5.
Lesnar then issued a challenge to Cena for a match at WWE Wrestlepalooza on September 20, the pair’s first one-on-one encounter since 2014.
