A WWE star made their return to television after two years away, addressing their release in a promo and setting up a championship match.
Two years ago, WWE star Mustafa Ali was in the midst of a run on the NXT brand, with him set to challenge Dominik Mysterio for the NXT North American Championship at the NXT No Mercy event.
However, just days before No Mercy, Ali was released from the company, ending a 7 year run with WWE, with Trick Williams instead replacing him against Dominik on the show.
Ali would sign with TNA in 2024, before re-signing with the company earlier this year after a brief departure.
With the WWE and TNA Showdown event set for next week, numerous TNA stars have appeared on WWE television in recent weeks, and this week it was Ali’s turn.
Ali interrupted North American Champion Ethan Page’s promo on the show, before he got in the ring himself and addressed his firing from the company two years earlier.
He said:
“It wasn’t that long ago that I earned an opportunity at the North American Championship, but that opportunity never came, and I started to wonder, maybe I’m cursed, but on this very day two years ago, I was promised a North American Championship match, but on that day the sun did not rise.
“Instead of a title match, I got a phone call. A phone call that my services were no longer needed. And here we are, 749 days later and I still am waiting for the championship match that I earned!”
