The WrestleMania 42 match between Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship will have a lasting impact, according to Pat McAfee.

Having recently returned to WWE and got himself involved in the Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes story going into WrestleMania 42, Pat McAfee has thrown his support behind the challenger ahead of the Undisputed WWE Championship match.

Confirmed as the Night 1 main event on April 18, McAfee has set out a bold belief about the match, tweeting:

“The night that’ll live on in documentaries and wrestling folklore FOREVER

“The night that @RandyOrton wins his 15th WORLD TITLE and in doing so SAVES THE BUSINESS

“And if he doesn’t… I’ll be GONE from wrestling FOREVER

“Come join us in LAS VEGAS for a ONCE IN A CENTURY evening.”

The post was met with a wall of less-than-friendly reaction by followers and fans, with McAfee having recently taken issue with “IWC Dips**ts” over criticism of his alliance with Orton.

Taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, the full line-up for WrestleMania 42 on both nights can be found right here.

Why, Pat McAfee? Why?

After weeks of speculation, Pat McAfee was revealed as the mystery man that Randy Orton has been in contact with, although it was a plot point that very nearly didn’t come into fruition.

Among the fanbase, reception hasn’t been great for McAfee, who was previously a well-liked member of the commentary team, an analyst and occasional in-ring competitor, with both Cody Rhodes and CM Punk making less-than-veiled comments in the direction of Ari Emanuel, the TKO CEO, who apparently brought about the situation.

Arguably, there was more than enough legacy between Orton and Rhodes to drive the story forward without the involvement of McAfee, regardless of whether there was a championship involved, although many fans were eager to learn who was on the other end of the phone before the actual reveal, with much speculation as to who fits all the clues, including the “more than one royal family” linew, which some saw as hinting at his own lineage, while others felt it could be a different multi-generational star.

Creatively, where does it go from here? Orton wins and becomes Undisputed WWE Champion with McAfee sticking around for reasons of ‘saving the business’? Or Rhodes retains, continuing his third reign, and McAfee is no more in the wrestling world. It feels a lot like the announcer has just become the unofficial stipulation for a top-tier championship match.
