WWE announcer Michael Cole has high praise for one star in particular as the “best professional wrestler on the planet today.”
Michael Cole has been with WWE since 1997 and has now firmly been the lead voice of the company for a number of years.
Speaking on the Sal Licata Show, Cole was asked to name the best match he’s ever called.
He replied:
“It’s hard to answer that question because there’s been so many, and I don’t wanna do any disrespect to anybody out there, because I know whatever my answer is, there’s probably 10 that were better than that.
“Let me answer it this way – there is a gentleman in this business right now who every time he wrestles a match, I get goosebumps. I love to call the match. I believe he is the best professional wrestler on the planet today, and that is GUNTHER.
“There’s such a mix on him. Either people hate him or they love him. He is such an old school throwback – we’re gonna be at The Garden for Monday Night Raw this coming Monday, road to WrestleMania, a couple of weeks away – if there’s ever a place for GUNTHER to be, it’s The Garden.
“When you think back to the Brunos and the Ivan Putskis and the Superstar Billy Grahams, and some of these all time greats, GUNTHER – who we call the Career Killer now because he’s ended the career of Goldberg, Cena and AJ Styles – he is an artist. He is incredible to watch in the ring.
“It is such a different way to express our business the way that he does it. So GUNTHER right now, to me, best on the planet, love calling his matches.”

WWE’s GUNTHER WrestleMania 42 Problem
WWE has a problem right now regarding WrestleMania 42, and that is the absence of GUNTHER in the build-up to the event.
GUNTHER was seemingly planned to face Rey Mysterio at Mania, but due to Mysterio suffering an injury, the match has been in question, and instead of enacting a backup plan, WWE has kept GUNTHER off TV completely.
To have the man who retired Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles completely missing from the build to WrestleMania has rightly drawn plenty of criticism from fans.
However, as Michael Cole stated, Madison Square Garden on Monday for Raw could be the perfect place to bring him back.
