WWE's Matt Cardona and Chelsea Green

Matt Cardona has explained why he’s “kind of glad” his wife Chelsea Green got injured one week following her Interim WWE Women’s Championship win.

The Friday, August 14 episode of WWE SmackDown saw Chelsea Green cut what many have hailed as her career best promo, in reaction to Nick Aldis’ decision to strip her of her newly won Interim WWE Women’s Title due to suffering a broken orbital bone the week prior.

Green’s performance showed a different side to what fans have been used to seeing, and the emotion she showed was enough to convince Aldis to reverse his decision and allow her 30 days to get herself cleared to defend her title.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Green’s husband Matt Cardona revealed that he told Green that he was “kind of glad” she got injured given that it led to her acclaimed promo, a promo Cardona feels has made her a “made woman” in WWE:

“I told her this I said ‘I’m actually kind of glad you got hurt because you were able to cut that heartfelt promo,’ which, I think makes her a made woman right now in WWE.

“I think everyone knows how entertaining she is but she’s so much more than that and I think that promo on Friday really cemented that.”

Cardona would then discuss what happened after Green’s promo, as she was unexpectedly interrupted by ‘The Ring General’ GUNTHER, who berated the Interim WWE Women’s Champion before Cardona intervened to defend his wife’s honor.

Admitting that he’s glad that GUNTHER “kicked his ass” on SmackDown, as it “really woke him up”, Cardona said:

“As for GUNTHER, I had no problem with that guy. I had no relationship with him we’d say hi and bye at work that’s about it. But if you disrespect my wife, then we have a problem.”

“It’s funny GUNTHER he tried to throw a little dig at me like ‘Oh, right from catering’ like I book the show. It’s not really an insult. It’s an insult when you disrespect my wife. I’m glad he kicked my ass because it woke me up.

“I don’t want to just be in WWE to collect a paycheck, get the salt and pepper chicken, get some t shirts. Nah, I want to be a major player in WWE.

So, GUNTHER kicking my ass really woke me up. “GUNTHER, thank you for running your mouth, thank you for disrespecting Chelsea, thank you for kicking my ass, because it really woke me up.”

GUNTHER defeated Cardona in an impromptu match after their confrontation, with ‘The Career Killer’ later getting into another tense face-off with Finn Balor backstage later in the same show.
