WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry has recalled the legitimate backstage reaction to his fake retirement, revealing who knew the plans for that segment.
The June 17, 2013 edition of Raw saw one of the most iconic segments in WWE history take place, with Mark Henry emotionally announcing his retirement, before attacking John Cena.
With this segment ultimately leading to a WWE Championship match at Money in the Bank that July, Mark Henry has revealed that his wife didn’t even know how this moment was planned to play out.
Noting that the only people who knew the plan ahead of time were himself and Vince McMahon, Henry revealed at what point John Cena found out what was going to happen, telling Nailz Knows:
“My wife thought I was really retired. I ain’t tell nobody. People were mad at me, Big Show wanted to fight me. Nobody knew but me and Vince.
“Cena didn’t know until he (handed him the WWE Championship). He tried to give it to me, then I said ‘No, you’ve got to earn that.’
“When I handed it to him, he jumped down and somebody talked to him. I remember seeing him go from crying, to him over there smiling like ‘Son of a bitch, you got me.'”

Recalling Big Show’s reaction to the segment, Henry continued:
“I got a voice message from Big Show on my phone, ‘I’m sitting on my couch crying, you son of a bitch.
“When I see you, Imma punch you in your teeth. My wife was sitting here watching my cry over your ass!’ It’s the best message I ever got.”

Mark Henry is legitimately retired now (so he says), last wrestling as part of the April 2018 Greatest Royal Rumble.
With the former World’s Strongest Man inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2018, we would see Henry receive a second induction as part of a faction.
Mark Henry has called for his former faction to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame before the members are so old that they need canes, click here to read more.
