John Cena has shared his own personal thoughts on his WWE retirement run as well as the “mixed opinions” regarding how it all went down.

After a year-long WWE retirement tour, John Cena wrapped up his 23 year in-ring career at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.

Even over two months on from his loss to GUNTHER, Cena closing out his career with his first submission loss in two decades is still a highly contested topic among fans – as is WWE’s booking of Cena’s entire final year in the company in 2025.

Speaking with The Takedown on SI, Cena said he “feels great” about how his WWE career came to a close, despite the mixed response from the audience:

“I wouldn’t say the end of my career is sad. I want to allow everyone to feel how they want to feel, but personally, I feel great.

“As long as I’m in one piece, I have love and fulfilment in my life, it was time to close that chapter and I really thought the last year, we went out with a bang, there were a lot of mixed opinions, but from my perspective, retirement is treating me well, so far.”

After making John Cena tap out in his final match, GUNTHER then retired Cena’s former rival AJ Styles in a similar fashion at WWE Royal Rumble 2026.

In another media appearance this week, Cena revealed an easter egg from his WWE retirement that fans missed – click here for full details.
