NXT Champion Joe Hendry has recalled the only interaction he’d had with Rndy Orton before their WWE WrestleMania 41 match.
Heading into Mania 41 last year, Orton was hosting an open challenge with his opponent unannounced until it was time to make his entrance.
The opponent ended up being Joe Hendry, who at the time was the TNA World Champion and still signed to TNA, not WWE.
It emerged afterwards that Orton was able to select his own choice of opponent for the match and specifically chose Hendry.
Despite that, as Joe Hendry revealed in a new interview with Complex, they had only had one very brief online interaction prior to the match.
Hendry explained:
“I’d obviously followed him on Twitter for years. He followed me on social media when my act started to get hot.
“And then I just said something to the effect of, ‘Thanks for following me, hope we get to work together some day in the future.’ This might have been 2024 or something like that.
“I can’t remember what the exact reply was, but it was just like, ‘Good luck to you, wishing you all the best.’ And the match actually happened.
“And that’s exactly what happened with how I got the match with Kurt Angle as well. So it’s interesting, I don’t know if there was a bit of manifestation in there. It’s interesting, it was the same thing with Kurt Angle.
“Nope (no other interactions). Just, ‘Thanks for following me back, hope we get to work together some day,’ and he said, ‘Good luck to you, wishing you all the best.'”

Joe Hendry’s Future In WWE
Joe Hendry appears to have a bright future in WWE, coming into NXT and very quickly becoming NXT Champion.
It’s not just NXT management who have given him the seal of approval either, as Triple H guaranteed after last year’s Randy Orton match that Joe Hendry would have more WrestleMania moments.
Hendry has used the past couple of years of his rise to collect advice from top names in the business including John Cena to help ensure his success isn’t momentary and he continues to advance his career – something he is clearly doing successfully as it’s now been several years that he’s been on an upward trajectory.
