LWO member Joaquin Wilde described his recently unveiled new look, seen on WWE Main Event, as “a correction.”
The April 9 episode of WWE Main Event saw “Original” El Grande Americano take on Joaquin Wilde.
Wilde sported fingerless black gloves, a rather short black leather jacket, and hair with a passing resemblance to Gohan in his ultimate form from Dragon Ball Z.
Addressing the look on Twitter, Wilde stated that it wasn’t a reinvention for the WWE star, noting:
“Not a reinvention. This is a correction.”
Fans would react by comparing his current look to that of his DJZ character from the star’s time in TNA Wrestling.
Previously known as Zema Ion when he signed with TNA Wrestling back in 2011, the star would go on to become DJZ after joining the BroMans, alongside Jessie Godderz and Robbie E (now WWE NXT general manager Robert Stone).
Departing TNA Wrestling on December 31 2018 after his contract expired, DJZ would be reborn as Joaquin Wilde after signing with WWE in March the following year.
A founding member of Legado Del Fantasa, Wilde went on to become a member of the LWO in March 2023.
“A Modern Gentleman’s Suit Of Armor”
Not only does “manners maketh man” but, if Harry Hart is to be believed in the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service, “a suit is the modern gentleman’s armor.”
Wrestling stars the world over reinvent themselves on a regular basis. Sometimes, it can be huge changes, such as a completely new persona, but often it can be a tweak to a character or something as simple as new ring attire.
At its most aesthetically fundamental, ring attire helps establish the character in the mind of the fan, with some styles becoming arguably iconic, such as John Cena and his jorts, The Undertaker and his hat, or Mick Foley and the red flannel shirt.
Ideally, the look should be unique enough to identify the wrestler or their affiliation, even if others may follow and imitate the style in question.
For Joaquin Wilde, he’s a man who has been known to have some, frankly, wacky and wild looks over his twenty-plus years as an in-ring star, but each has been popular among his fan base.
If fans are correct in this being a throwback to his DJZ look, it can only be a good thing for a star who was a two-time X Division Champion and TNA World Tag Team Champion, as long as it makes him stand out.
