WWE has now officially announced how the new holder of a recently vacated championship will be determined.
A couple of weeks ago on WWE Evolve, NXT star Kendal Grey vacated the Evolve Women’s Championship to focus full-time on being part of the NXT women’s division.
Timothy Thatcher’s Championship Announcement
Tonight, Evolve General Manager/Foreman Timothy Thatcher has announced how the new champion will be decided.
Thatcher stated that in three weeks on April 15, an Eliminator Gauntlet match will take place to determine the new WWE Evolve Women’s Champion.
The rules for that match are as follows:
Two competitors start in the ring
A new competitor enters every two minutes
Eliminations occur by pinfall, submission or disqualification
The match continues until one competitor remains, and she becomes the Evolve Women’s Champion
On next week’s edition of Evolve, there will be a five-way match to determine who gets to be the final entrant in the gauntlet match.
That five-way will feature Nikkita Lyons, PJ Vasa, Wendy Choo, WWE ID Women’s Champion Laynie Luck and Kali Armstrong.
Armstrong was the inaugural Evolve Women’s Champion, holding the title for 140 days before losing it to Grey.
Who Should Be The Next WWE Evolve Women’s Champion?
While the full field for the Eliminator Gauntlet match isn’t confirmed, one would expect the five women vying for the last spot to be in it.
Of that lineup, all five have arguments for why they could or should be the next WWE Evolve Women’s Champion.
Lyons was a top prospect on NXT as far back as four years ago, but injuries derailed her momentum and she’s been able to rebuild on Evolve over the past few months.
Vasa was one of the most highly touted women’s competitors on WWE LFG, and could make a statement by winning title gold so early in her career.
Wendy Choo is a tenured veteran compared to pretty much everyone on the Evolve roster at this point, and could be a great name to have as the figurehead of the women’s division, especially after her recent repackaging to ditch the ‘sleepy’ persona.
Luck and Armstrong have strong arguments too as far as making history – Luck to become the first double ID & Evolve Champion, or Armstrong to become the first two-time Evolve Champion.
If there’s any other standout from the Evolve women’s division worth a mention as the potential next champion, it could be Karmen Petrovic, who has been unfortunate over the last few months to have not been featured in the NXT women’s division, but if there aren’t plans for her to get back on TV, she’d certainly be a worthy champion in Evolve.
