Roman Reigns and CM Punk on WWE Raw

Tommy Dreamer has reflected on the war of words between CM Punk and Roman Reigns on WWE Raw, saying they were “spitting fire”.

Ahead of their WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42 on April 19, CM Punk and Roman Reigns exchanged words on the go-home edition of Raw.

With Punk revealing that his hatred of Reigns comes from envy, the Best in the World would also apologize for referencing the late father of The OTC, Sika, in a previous promo.

Reigns would also share his dislike of his opponent, but noted that he hopes fans miss him as much as they missed Punk when The OTC eventually leaves.

Speaking on Busted Open After Dark, Tommy Dreamer shared his thoughts on the exchange, describing it as “one of the most truthful segments”, saying:

“Tonight was just straight up spitting fire, selling the match. It was one of the most truthful segments I’ve seen on television in a long, long time.

“Both guys told their story, and really made me feel for them. (Even) if they went out for a bite to eat afterwards, I would really, truly think that they did not like each other, because of their history.”

Reigns has previously addressed a potential retirement and what he has yet to accomplish in his time as a WWE star.

Controversy Creates Cash

Bringing up the father of Roman Reigns was a bold move for CM Punk, with the beloved member of the Anoa’i dynasty passing away in June of last year.

However, controversy creates cash, as Eric Bischoff would state, even making it the name of his 2006 autobiography. While the cash, in this sense, may not have been strictly monetary, there’s an argument to be made that Punk’s reference became a moment in his feud with Reigns.

An apology, as seen on last night’s WWE Raw, could be seen as a softening of the rhetoric, except it’s clear that the story runs deeper than just one line in a promo.

Punk has made a career of pipe bomb moments, and that hasn’t lessened since his return to WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames in 2023, with Seth Rollins making his feelings very well known after that appearance.

In the absence of CM Punk, WWE has weathered many storms and seen many controversies, with new challenges, such as ticket pricing, finding their way into the words of the Second City Saint.

At WrestleMania 42, there’ll be no more words between both men, and CM Punk will face a man very comfortable at the top of WWE, with Roman Reigns having promised to “return this place to where it was.”
