After suffering a loss to an AEW star in their opening G1 Climax bout, a current champion forfeited their second match due to injury.

Night two of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s G1 Climax 35 tournament kicked off with an unfortunate announcement, as current IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion Gabe Kidd pulled out of his scheduled match with reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion Zack Sabre Jr.

Coming out on crutches, Kidd announced that he had hyper-extended his knee and would be forfeiting the champion vs. champion encounter as a result.

Despite the setback, Kidd confirmed that he intends to still compete in the G1 once he’s cleared to return to action, however, it is unclear at this time how long he will be out.

Kidd, who has become a somewhat recurring character on AEW television lately via his affiliation with The Death Riders, lost his opening G1 bout to AEW’s Konosuke Takeshita on July 19.

The G1 Climax 35 tournament will run from Saturday, July 19 until Sunday, August 17.

We will provide updates on Kidd’s injury and his status for the rest of the G1 when more news becomes available.
