A former AEW star, Blake Monroe has opened up about her character growth as a member of the WWE NXT roster.
Known to AEW fans as Mariah May, the London-born star headed to WWE in June of last year, appearing on the NXT brand.
After becoming AEW Women’s World Champion during her two years in Tony Khan’s company, Monroe’s time in WWE has already seen her become NXT Women’s North American Champion.
Her journey has more than championships at its heart, however, with the star reflecting on her growth from “ground zero” in a recent interview with KSDK, saying:
“When I came to the United States, I was kind of starting almost from ground zero. I had done promos when I was on the independents, like made my own videos for my YouTube channel and things like that, but I had never been in a ring with a mic and just gotten to speak. So for me, it was like getting to discover this fun new part of wrestling.
“I watch my first in-ring promo … and now how confident I am. I’m only getting better and better.”
Her interest in her growth goes beyond just promos, too, with Monroe going on to reveal that she evaluates her matches, ring attire and presentation on a regular basis, stating:
“To be able to watch a match and then watch one a year later and be like, ‘Wow, I got so much better’, that’s something I really love.”
Monroe would also recognize her strengths as a storyteller, able to get the necessary response from the fans, particularly noting the joy she gets from young female fans.
The Main Roster Beckons For Blake Monroe
With the possibility of a main roster call-up for Blake Monroe, the star has recently weighed in on the possibility of holding the NXT Women’s Championship before such a move.
She may not be 100% in control of her destiny, with WWE’s creative decision-making machine occasionally throwing curveballs in the direction of NXT and calling up stars with already established plans, especially in the context of the fast-approaching WrestleMania 42 and new opportunities coming out of that event.
This Saturday sees Monroe face off against Tatum Paxley, the current NXT Women’s North American Champion, with a potential second title reign, while Jacy Jayne defends the aforementioned NXT Women’s Championship in a Triple Threat match against Kendal Grey and Lola Vice.
There are multiple upsides for Monroe on the main roster, allowing her to showcase her talents to a larger audience both live and on television, whether she were to head to Raw or SmackDown, although there’s clearly more for her to do on the NXT roster less than a year into her WWE career.
If it doesn’t happen soon, there’s plenty of time for Monroe to have her moment and many potential challenges ahead.
