There’s been a big change regarding WWE star El Grande Americano as he had a match for AAA in Mexico tonight.
First portrayed by Chad Gable before he took time off for surgery, the role of El Grande Americano has been played by Ludwig Kaiser since the end of June.
While he’s been a heel in WWE, the Americano character has actually been very popular with fans in Mexico, and has made appearances for AAA regularly as part of the WWE/AAA crossovers.
That included tonight’s AAA Alianzas event, although there was a notable big change to Americano’s presentation.
Rather than usual red, white and blue ring gear and mask based on the colors of USA, Americano had a new mask and gear tonight.
The new attire is instead based on the Mexican flag, with the colors of green, white and red – as well as some gold on the mask.
You can see a photo of the new look in the photo from tonight’s show below. It remains to be seen whether this is something that’ll carry over to WWE TV, or just something for Mexico shows given Americano’s popularity there.
Americano picked up the win against El Fiscal tonight. After the match, there was a segment with Americano, El Hijo Del Vikingo and (via video) Dominik Mysterio, which ended with Americano singing with the crowd.
A few weeks ago on WWE Raw, Americano had some backup in the form of Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate under similar red, white and blue masks, but they haven’t appeared since then and the story there has yet to be fully explained.
With WWE & AAA Worlds Collide set for Friday, September 12 this coming week in Las Vegas, Americano is not currently on the card for that event.
Among the top matches are Dominik Mysterio challenging El Hijo Del Vikingo for the AAA Mega Championship, New Day challenging Pagano & Psycho Clown for the AAA Tag Team Championship, and Finn Balor & Roxanne Perez vs Mr Iguana & Lola Vice.
There’s also a Latin American Championship four-way with El Hijo De Dr Wagner Jr defending against Ethan Page, Dragon Lee and JD McDonagh, Faby Apache vs Natalya in a Reina de Reinas Championship #1 contender’s match, and an eight-man lucha showcase with Abismo Negro Jr, Cruz Del Toro, Joaquin Wilde & Lince Dorado facing La Parka, Microman, Nino Hamburguesa & Octagon Jr.
