A new update has emerged regarding the WWE return of AJ Lee and this week’s September 5 episode of SmackDown.
Clash In Paris this past Sunday ended with Becky Lynch attacking CM Punk to help her husband Seth Rollins retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
This meant for the first time really since 2019, Rollins and Lynch had been partnered up on TV, leading many to believe Punk would bring in his own wife – three-time WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee – for a mixed tag team match.
The prospect of an AJ Lee return was even brought up during the official post-show by Jackie Redmond and Big E.
Then on Raw the following night, Punk and Lynch went back-and-forth on the mic in the ring, before Lynch got physical with Punk, repeatedly slapping him and mocking the fact that he couldn’t do anything to retaliate.
However, Punk did say he’d make Lynch regret what she did, which seemed to be another hint at bringing in backup.
Punk then teased that he’ll be appearing on this week’s episode of SmackDown, which is in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois.
AJ Lee has been away from WWE for 10 years, but the Wrestling Observer reported today that the plan for Wrestlepalooza on September 20 is indeed Punk and Lee vs Rollins and Lynch.
Now, Fightful Select has provided another update, specifically regarding SmackDown.
According to Fightful, WWE sources “heavily implied” that AJ Lee is set to feature as part of SmackDown in some way – whether it’s her actual return appearance, or at least a reference to her ahead of her comeback.
Another note is that WWE hopes Lee’s return won’t just be for this one-off match, although whether it will or won’t be isn’t confirmed at this point.
Wrestlepalooza is WWE’s first premium live event on ESPN as the partnership kicks off a number of months earlier than originally announced.
As such, WWE is building up a big card featuring the aforementioned mixed tag match, as well as the expected additions of John Cena vs Brock Lesnar, Cody Rhodes vs Drew McIntyre (potentially with Randy Orton involved), and The Usos reuniting against Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed – as well as the already announced Women’s World Title match between IYO SKY and Stephanie Vaquer.
The show will also be going head-to-head with AEW All Out.
