An AEW star has reached the final of NJPW’s G1 Climax 35 tournament, defeating the reigning IWGP World Heavyweight Champion to get there.

Emanating from Tokyo’s Ariake Arena on Saturday, August 16, Night 18 of this year’s G1 Climax saw the tournament’s two semi-final matches take place.

In the first of the two bouts, House of Torture frontman EVIL overcame last year’s losing G1 finalist Yota Tsuji, winning via referee stoppage courtesy of his submission move the Darkness Scorpion, following outside interference from Bad Luck Fale and Dick Togo whilst the referee was down.

With a rematch against Tsuji in the final ruled out, reigning G1 Climax winner and IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Zack Sabre Jr. took on AEW’s Konosuke Takeshita in the other semi-final, closing the show in Tokyo.

After losing to Sabre Jr. in their Block B encounter during Night 8 of the tournament, it was Takeshita who picked up the win this time courtesy of a Raging Fire from the top rope.

The G1 Climax final between Takeshita and EVIL will take place on Sunday, August 17.
