A Hall of Famer has addressed WWE Championship plans ahead of WrestleMania 42, following the recent title change.
With Cody Rhodes defeating Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship on the March 6 SmackDown episode, the American Nightmare is set to defend his gold against Elimination Chamber match winner Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42.
Ahead of the April 18-19 event, Bully Ray has revealed his hopes for the build for this feud, noting that he doesn’t want there to be a heel turn this early, despite many fans predicting one is coming to build friction.
Pitching for the rivalry to be built around “respect and credibility” until things shift into another gear later on, Bully Ray noted the following on Busted Open:
“For Cody Rhodes, ‘I need to beat Randy Orton in order for me to be able to look at myself in the mirror and put my head on the pillow and know that I am the best of the best.’ There’s your nice respectful start to a contract signing.
“It’s what matters in Cody’s heart and Cody’s mind about how he views Randy, not only as a mentor, but as a champion. You give me that kind of start, I don’t need anybody turning heel on one another this week, but you give me that kind of start, I’m very invested in this match.
“I don’t need to hear about ‘I’m going to bury you next to your dead father’ or anything like that, I don’t need that. We’ve got the hate with Roman (Reigns) and (CM) Punk.
“I want respect and credibility of a championship on this one, until it’s time to go into a little bit of a different direction.”
