With multiple titles being defended at WrestleMania 42, the WWE Evolve Championship has been added to the week’s proceedings.
The March 18 episode of WWE Evolve saw Aaron Rourke defeat Jackson Drake to become the brand’s new champion, with the match having been taped back in February.
It has now been confirmed that Rourke will defend his recently won championship over WrestleMania 42 week in Las Vegas.
In an announcement on the WWE ID Twitter account, it was confirmed that Rourke will take on former WWE ID Champion Cappuccino Jones on April 16, with the post reading:
“WWE Evolve Champion Aaron Rourke will defend the WWE Evolve Championship in Las Vegas during Wrestlemania week!
“It will be Rourke vs. former WWE ID Champion Cappuccino Jones on April 16th when @FSWVegas presents The ID Showcase!”
This comes after Jones – who lost the WWE ID Championship to Starboy Charlie on March – revealed that he had set his sights on the Evolve Championship in the wake of his own loss.
A WrestleMania First For WWE Evolve
WWE Evolve came into being in March of last year, with the men’s and women’s championships being revealed in May, missing out on representation during WrestleMania 41 week.
This year marks the first time the men’s WWE Evolve Championship will be defended during WrestleMania week, with that match taking place at The ID Showcase.
With fans from across the world descending on Las Vegas for the two-night Premium Live Event and a veritable smorgasbord of wrestling action taking place in the city, this gives a prime opportunity for WWE officials to see how ID talent is received by the very fans who are likely to be watching the main roster stars at WrestleMania.
Cappuccino Jones has previously reflected on the standing of WWE ID contracted stars, particularly those who hold the title, who continue to perform on the independent scene.
With many of those stars likely to be in action outside of the aforementioned ID Showcase across WrestleMania week, the potential for many more eyes to be on stars of the development program is clear.
Being in Las Vegas, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that some of the WWE ID stars may be in attendance, albeit in a backstage capacity, when WrestleMania 42 takes over the Allegiant Stadium, with opportunities also for SmackDown and Raw at the T-Mobile Arena, book ending the two-night Premium Live Event.
