Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson at the WWE Raw Netflix premiere

An update on The Rock’s next non-WWE project has emerged, along with when fans will next see him on the big screen.

The upcoming live-action version of Disney’s Moana isn’t the only time that fans of The Rock will catch him on the big screen this year.

While Dwayne Johnson may be donning hair as Maui for the movie set for release on July 10, his follow-up project will see him in a more recognizable role, reuniting with Kevin Hart and Jack Black.

The sequel to Jumanji: The Next Level has now wrapped production, as confirmed by Seven Bucks Productions in a post on Twitter that reads:

“That’s an official production wrap on #Jumanji

“See you in theaters CHRISTMAS DAY 🎬📆”

The post was accompanied by a photo of Johnson, alongside his co-stars in the movie franchise’s fifth entry.

The as-yet-untitled sequel marks the return of Johnson to the role of Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone, previously the neurotic Spencer Gilpin until he is caught up in the boardgame world.

With Johnson continuing to experience box office success, AEW’s MJF has previously revealed hopes to follow The Rock, Batista and John Cena in their Hollywood careers.

The Rock’s Recent Hollywood Projects

Despite strong critical response, particularly for Johnson’s portrayal of Mark Kerr, The Smashing Machine failed to pick up a lead actor Academy Award nomination for The Rock, with the only recognition being in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category, won by the team behind Frankenstein.

Johnson’s performance would receive nominations at the Golden Globes, with the Benny Safdie movie’s biggest victory being the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival last September.

It wasn’t the only Safdie project to fall short at the Academy Awards, although the Timothee Chalamet-led Marty Supreme failed to take home an Oscar in any of the nine categories it was nominated for.

Revisiting previously trodden territory may seem like a climb-down for the highly bankable star who previously opened up about being ‘pigeon-holed‘, but there can be little doubt that Moana and the Jumanji franchise have both been successful entries in Johnson’s expansive filmography.

Both movies will see Johnson produce alongside his ex-wife, Dany Garcia, and former brother-in-law, Hiram Garcia, under their company, Seven Bucks Productions, with that relationship seeing the WWE star continue his meteoric cinematic rise.

While Moana should be a summer success for Disney internationally, choosing to release the Jumanji franchise entry on Christmas Day sees the movie land after the double-whammy of Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday on December 18.

Originally set for release on December 11, the untitled Jumanji movie continues a tradition dating back to the original 1995 movie of releasing during the festive month, with Zathura: A Space Adventure being the only outlier with a November date.

Christmas Day won’t be totally clear for Johnson, with the Robert Eggers follow-up to Nosferatu, Werwulf, and an untitled John Tuggle biographical movie starring David Corenswet (Superman), also confirmed for release, but neither is the audience that Jumanji likely seeks.
