A WWE star was reportedly “pushing” to win a big match at the 2026 Royal Rumble premium live event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Standing out as the only title match on the WWE Royal Rumble card, Drew McIntyre successfully retained his recently won Undisputed WWE Championship against Sami Zayn – extending his career record against the Canadian star to 12-0.
While the match was only McIntyre’s first WWE Championship defense since dethroning Cody Rhodes on the January 9 episode of SmackDown, Sami Zayn was reportedly “pushing” to defeat McIntyre according to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Meltzer revealed that the match’s result was still being discussed until the day of the Royal Rumble event, writing:
I don’t think Zayn should have won and neither did Levesque in the end.
Still, this was a subject of discussion as to who would win right until the day of the show since Zayn was pushing for it.
After defeating Zayn, McIntyre returned to the ring later in the night to eliminate Cody Rhodes from the Men’s Royal Rumble Match, which was eventually won by Roman Reigns.
A new report has detailed how WWE’s plans for the two-night event have changed in recent months, as well as who was at one point set to win the Men’s Rumble Match – click here for full details.
