A top WWE star has called out “hypocritical” fans for their changing reaction to John Cena during his retirement tour.

The career of John Cena was, for a long time defined by the polarising reaction the 17-time world champion would receive during every appearance he made on WWE programming.

However, as Cena’s appearances became less frequent and his career began to wind down, the reactions became almost entirely positive, with that especially being the case during Cena’s retirement run this year.

Even when Cena attempted to become the most despised heel in wrestling in the first half of his WWE farewell tour, many fans still showered him with adulation for his years of service to the company and wrestling as a whole.

Speaking with TMZ Sports, GUNTHER, who retired Cena at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, called out fans for their hypocrisy and acting like they never hated Cena 10-15 years ago:

“It’s a little bit funny with fans to me because in this last run that Cena had, especially the second half of it, the connection people had to him is just amazing. I’ve never seen something like that before. But it’s also funny when you think back, I don’t know like 10, 15 years he was the most hated guy on the whole roster.

“He was a babyface but he went out there and he got booed everywhere he went. People complained that he got shoved down their throats, and here we are, 10-15 years later and people act like it never happens and the situation never existed, now they all love him.

“A bit hypocritical if you ask me sometimes, but that’s what the fans are. Whatever is the flavor of the month they jump on it.”
