A WWE star has jumped to ‘Road Dogg’ Brian James’ defence following fan criticism of his appointment as SmackDown’s new co-lead writer.
In June 2024, John Swikata was named the new lead writer for WWE SmackDown, remaining in the creative hotseat for the remainder of the year and into 2025, when the show shifted from two hours to three.
As previously reported Swikata has now been joined by Road Dogg with the two serving as co-lead writers for the blue brand going forward.
Following the news of Road Dogg’s appointment some fans voiced their displeasure on social media, citing Road Dogg’s prior time in charge of SmackDown’s creative between 2016 and 2019, and the quality of the show during that time as a reason to be concerned.
In response to one tweet expressing this sentiment, WWE Raw star AJ Styles jumped to Road Dogg’s defence, alluding to the fact that Road Dogg previously worked under Vince McMahon during his earlier stint as SmackDown writer, someone notorious for making late script changes.
Styles wrote:
Before judging this guy from his past performance as the head writer. Just know that there was a man who picked it apart to the point that it was no longer his ideas anymore.
While Styles previously played a big role on SmackDown when Road Dogg was the lead writer, The Phenomenal One will not be working with the Hall of Famer as much this time around, as Styles was drafted to Raw following his recent return at the 2025 Royal Rumble.
Styles is set to take on Dominik Mysterio one-on-one on this week’s WWE Raw (February 17), for news of another match added to the card for Raw check here.
