A legendary WWE name has opened up on their role in John Cena’s retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December.
When John Cena competed in his final match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in December against Gunther, a number of legendary names from throughout Cena’s career were brought in for the show.
Among those names was legendary ring announcer Lilian Garcia, who provided ring announcing duties for the match, with Lilian having a long history with Cena.
Lilian Garcia On Announcing John Cena’s Final Match
Speaking about her ring announcing duties on Busted Open Radio, she said:
“I couldn’t believe it, as a matter of fact leading up to it I was wondering if they were gonna do something different or if I was going to be able to announce him.
“The fans kept showing me clips, I was the first person to ever interview him, it was right before his pay-per-view on Sunday Night Heat. I was the first person to interview him there, and the first person to announce him on Raw.
“So they were like ‘it makes so much sense that you’d be announcing his final, and I was like ‘it would be really cool, but in the world of WWE you never know’.
“So I was kind of hesitant to be excited about it in a way, until it happened. When it happened, I saw him afterwards, he gave me a high five, he’s like ‘thank you so much, you killed it’ and he’s just really appreciative of all the years that I’ve been able to announce him, and I’m of course appreciative of all the work he’s done in our industry over the years.”

Was Gunther The Right Man To Retire John Cena?
John Cena was the second WWE legend to have their career ended by Gunther in 2025, after Gunther had previously retired Bill Goldberg at Saturday Night’s Main Event in July.
Gunther would go on to pick up the mantel of the ‘career killer’, with him then adding AJ Styles’ career to his list at the Royal Rumble in January.
While Gunther is one of the best wrestlers in the entire company, WWE has seemingly hit a wall with Gunther and his character of the ‘Career Killer’ in the months since.
Gunther was reportedly set for a match with Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42, but with Mysterio now currently injured, Gunther is without a natural match at the biggest show of the year.
Leaving the man who retired John Cena off WrestleMania would be a major mistake from WWE, who has now seemingly backed themself into a corner my making Gunther’s character too dependent on retiring legendary names.
