On July 26, Thorpe made a return to the independent wrestling scene under his Karl Fredericks name.

The return took place at DPW x Prestige x West Coast Pro Cruel Summer at the United Irish Cultural Center in San Francisco, California.

Reporting on his return, Fightful noted that Fredericks got into the ring after the intermission to cut a promo.

The promo saw the former WWE star reflect on his Indian heritage, confirming he’s back on the independent wrestling scene and saying that he has regained his love of pro-wrestling.

He would then go on to reference the “cowboy” sitting in Orlando, noting that he is “not their Indian”.

Fredericks had previously been critical of his character in WWE NXT, which leaned into his Native American heritage

Revealing how he felt his character lacked depth, the former Eddy Thorpe would also reveal that he’d discussed a pitch that would see him obsessed with the NXT North American Championship.

Following the release from his WWE contract, Fredericks would state he was in ‘vacation mode’, though had some phone calls, choosing not to elaborate on their content.
