Former WWE SmackDown co-head writer ‘Road Dogg’ Brian James is expected to attend TNA Wrestling Slammiversary on June 28.

In March of this year, Brian James parted ways with WWE, having served as the co-head writer for SmackDown since February 2025.

According to a subsequent report, James left WWE following his annual review, with it being noted that “he wasn’t happy with it“.

With changes to the structure of TNA Wrestling, it has now been reported that the WWE Hall of Famer may be heading to Sacrifice this coming weekend.

PWInsiderElite reports that James is “expected to be in attendance at this Sunday’s TNA Slammiversary PPV in Boston”, with it being noted that the company had tried to keep this very much under wraps.

According to the report, James was “initially pitched as a potential producer”, however, with Tommy Dreamer no longer in his TNA Wrestling creative role, some behind-the-scenes believe that the WWE Hall of Famer may become part of the creative team, which is currently led by Hunter Johnston and the Vice President of TV Production Eric Tompkins, according to a separate report from PWInsider.

An unnamed source also noted that James enjoyed a “close relationship” with Johnny Russo, the head writer of WWE NXT, which would no doubt be beneficial for the partnership between both companies.

The Renegades Of DX Become The Corporate Face Of WWE

Along with standing as Hall of Famers, Road Dogg, Triple H and Shawn Michaels were all familiar to WWE fans as members of Degeneration X long before they took up their respective executive roles.

While Triple H continues to serve as WWE Chief Content Officer and Michaels as Senior Vice President of Talent Development, Creative, James’ future clearly lies elsewhere, despite his tenure as co-head writer of SmackDown.

Whereas previous higher-ups, particularly on the creative side, may have booked themselves into the top spot on occasion, the same doesn’t appear to be true of James, Michaels or Triple H, all of whom have long retired from in-ring action.

Regardless of where James may land, he brings with him all the knowledge he has amassed as a former star and WWE executive, able to shape the future of a company such as TNA Wrestling, without making it all about him as a personality. This is very much something that Triple H did when he brought NXT to life, with Shawn Michaels now serving in a similar capacity.

There’s no doubt that there are more successes in the future for Brian James, be it in TNA Wrestling or elsewhere, and there is always the potential for a return to WWE, should situations improve in his favor.
