‘I’m A Wrestler’s Wrestler’ – Blake Monroe Responds To Praise From WWE Legend Mark Henry

WWE's Blake Monroe next to Mark Henry

With high praise from Mark Henry, Blake Monroe has addressed recent comments made by the WWE Hall of Famer after her main roster call-up.

Blake Monroe was called up to the main roster late last month, though is still to make her WWE SmackDown debut, despite a vignette on the April 24 episode.

With Mark Henry, who shared time with Monroe during her run in AEW as Mariah May, reflecting on the prospect of the star on the main roster, the Hall of Famer would note that she is “an old school, throwback wrestler.”

During a recent interview with Vicente Beltrán, Monroe would reflect on those comments and her stance as a “wrestler’s wrestler”, saying:

“That means a lot. I mean, I love Mark Henry. I was smiling (while) reading that, which I don’t often smile. It did make me really happy because I do think I’m pretty old school and pretty traditional.

“You know, I’m a wrestlers’ wrestler, and if you look at my journey and moving all around the world and getting good at this craft, I think, like I said, Blake Monroe has something that not every woman has.

“And, don’t get me wrong, everybody’s journey is special, but I’m a wrestler’s wrestler, and I think you’re going to see that when I do eventually decide to debut on SmackDown.”

A SmackDown debut is yet to happen, although Monroe would go on to discuss the possibility of that taking place when the Friday night show heads to Spain during the European Summer Tour.

Old School With Modern Sensibilities

Old school, she may be, but Blake Monroe has shown that she has a fine grasp of modern sensibilities.

During her time in NXT, Monroe paired with Jordynne Grace, attempting to bring some of The Glamour to the imposing powerlifter, with humorous results that showed that, beyond appearance and in-ring ability, the former AEW star has ample comedic potential. The more strings to her bow, the better, when it comes to success.

Naturally, Mark Henry’s assessment is spot on, with the former Mariah May having competed globally prior to stepping foot in the AEW ring back in 2023. Her time in Japan reaped rewards, becoming the Goddesses of Stardom Champion with Mina Shirakawa, while she would also be the inaugural Slammaster Women’s Champion and United Wrestling Champion during her independent scene run.

A former AEW Women’s World Champion, her feud with Toni Storm will be the sort of program that should be spoken about highly for years to come, with both stars showing how a bitter rivalry can go.

Women’s wrestling has progressed far from the era of the Divas, where screen time seemingly wasn’t given as much priority as titillation, and while Monroe may present herself in a pin-up style, she has demonstrated that she’s a competent heavy-hitter, willing to take risks to elevate her career.

With the John Cena Classic approaching, Monroe has thrown the names of Tatum Paxley and Kendal Grey into the ring as potential opponents in NXT vs main roster star matches, both stars she is more than familiar.  As interesting as such match ups may be, there’s more opportunity on SmackDown for Monroe to demonstrate her old school mentality.
