WWE stars Baron Corbin, Pat McAfee and Cody Rhodes

Former WWE star Baron Corbin – now known as Bishop Dyer – has shared his honest thoughts about Pat McAfee returning as Randy Orton’s ally.

Dyer is someone who knows Pat McAfee very closely and even had a match against him at WWE SummerSlam 2022.

In a new interview with Denise Salcedo, Dyer gave his opinion on the reveal of McAfee as Randy Orton’s mystery phone caller on WWE SmackDown, saying:

“I don’t know, I’m torn. Pat’s my boy, even though I like to kick him in the nuts every once in a while.

“Pat’s a weird anomaly, because he’s not a celebrity to a full extent, he’s not a wrestler to (a full extent)… he’s kinda that guy that’s in between and has his finger in everything in that sense. Whether it be comedy, entertainment, sports, wrestling, all that.

“So it’s not a Travis Scott all over again that ruined the main event. But I also think the main event of WrestleMania does not need a celebrity or outside involvement. I think the story should be between the two guys.

WWE Telling The Wrong Story With Cody Rhodes & Randy Orton

Many WWE fans believe the company has missed the mark with the story being told between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton.

Their history dates back almost 20 years with Orton being Rhodes’ first ever main roster opponent in 2007, and then forming Legacy together in 2009 with Ted DiBiase.

However, very little has been made of the history of their relationship, and now the focus is on Pat McAfee trying to overthrow Rhodes as the face of WWE by installing Orton in that position.

Bishop Dyer shared that sentiment, noting that he’s “bummed out” with the story so far. He said:

“I’m bummed out a little bit with the story that’s being told between Cody and Randy. I think that with the history they have, and Randy being the mentor, and Randy having Cody throw his brother out of the Royal Rumble – why are we not… that’s the story we need to be telling.

“Why do we have this anonymous phone call and then it turns out to be McAfee? It’s gonna be good, but I just feel like when you’re having that big of a prizefight that’s gonna main event probably the first night of WrestleMania, why do we have to have someone else?

“It’d be like having a special guest referee. The purest form of wrestling should be the main event of WrestleMania. That should be a one-on-one competition, down the line, except for a heel trying to take some shortcuts or whatever. That’s the thing that, to me, shouldn’t be touched.

“It’s like the NFL SuperBowl should be the two best teams playing for the championship. The ProBowl is where you have fun and you throw different mixes in and you have challenges, and that’s where you have guests and other people.

“I just think the main event of WrestleMania is sacred and when you add a celebrity… I mean, the Travis Scott thing, oh my god. And it won’t be that again with Pat, because he is a wrestler. But it’s like, how far do they take this?

“Is there gonna be involvement in the wrestling match that night? I get we want Cody to overcome things, we’re gonna get a different edge of Cody. I think Randy Orton‘s one of the greatest of all time, he’s one of my favorite people of all time.

WWE To Change WrestleMania 42 Main Event Plans?

WWE has seemingly been planning for Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton to main event night one of WrestleMania 42, with CM Punk vs Roman Reigns headlining night two.

However, Bishop Dyer has suggested the company could pivot to Oba Femi vs Brock Lesnar main eventing night one with Rhodes vs Orton opening the event instead – that way, the main event wouldn’t be marred by outside interference.

He concluded:

“I’m Monday morning quarterbacking it here, this is just my opinion, right or wrong, people can love or hate my opinion and that’s okay – I would have rather, if you’re gonna get Pat involved, get him involved in something else. Not the main event of WrestleMania.

“However, now I see this Oba/Lesnar stuff and to me, that could main event night one. I’m sure they’ll open, Lesnar loves opening PLEs because they’re not gonna close night two obviously, that’ll be Roman and Punk, at least I’m guessing.

“So maybe Cody and Randy open, and with the celebrity involvement it works and I look like an asshole when everybody watches this. That’s just my thoughts on it.

“Pat’s an incredible performer, an incredible personality, he has an infectious personality. But I think you saw the response on social media that fans were not happy with the involvement.

“But also when you shoot an angle for four weeks of who’s on the phone, no matter who it is, people are gonna be disappointed. It’s so hard to do things like that nowadays.”

Many WWE personnel weren’t on board with Pat McAfee’s involvement in Cody Rhodes vs Randy Orton, as it came as a directive from Endeavor and TKO CEO Ari Emanuel.
