WWE star Seth Rollins has recalled the early days of The Shield on the main roster, discussing the reaction to him, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns.
With Rollins, Ambrose (now Jon Moxley in AEW) and Reigns making their main roster debuts together at Survivor Series 2012, the trio went on to become one of the most impactful factions in WWE history.
Speaking on Club Shay Shay, Seth Rollins recalled the trio being called up to the main roster, believing that the bosses didn’t know what they were getting themselves into.
Recalling his, Ambrose’s and Roman Reigns’ attitudes at the time, Rollins said:
“I’m in Tampa in a warehouse for two years, basically in a holding cell, waiting, waiting, waiting waiting. We finally got the call up…
“I don’t think that my bosses knew exactly what they were getting themselves into when they gave us the opportunity, myself, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose.
“Myself and Dean Ambrose especially – Jon Moxley now – we had a little bit of a following because of what we’d done on the independents. When we burst onto the scene, social media exploded.
“‘They’re finally here, we heard they had been signed for a long time.’ This was the beginning of social media playing a role in what happens from an audience perspective on WWE. They gave us the ball and kept giving us the ball because we kept scoring touchdowns.
“That’s the thing, man, if you get the ball, you make plays, they’re going to call your number more. That was the thing, I was like ‘Just give me the damn ball, that’s all I ever wanted, just give me the ball, I’m telling you we can make this happen.’
“Myself and Jon, we were both like that. Roman was a little bit greener and didn’t have the experience so he was along for the ride, but myself and Jon, we were ready. When the time came, we took the ball and ran with it, and changed everything.”
