WWE Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative Shawn Michaels has named a former rival who he thinks of as the measuring stick for future recruits.
Shawn Michaels’ current role with WWE sees him oversee creative on NXT, and talent development within the developmental brand of the company.
Speaking on 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, Shawn Michaels praised Hall of Famer Kurt Angle, highlighting his quick transition from amateur wrestling to pro-wrestling.
Thinking of Angle as the standard during NXT’s recruitment process, Michaels said:
“Kurt, easily the best transition from what he did, to our stuff. Did it seamlessly, what a stud.
He absolutely is the guy. He is the standard, certainly from an NXT standpoint when we’re recruiting now, using Kurt as the guy who’s the best to have done it in such a seamless, quick manner.
“He was just a natural at it, Kurt was. He was the real deal, and could just come in and do our stuff, and wear a little cowboy hat and be funny, then go out there and stretch somebody like nobody’s business.”

WWE has multiple avenues for recruitment, with the WWE ID program giving independent wrestlers an pathway to join the company, and the NIL program establishing relationships with college athletes who could potentially make the transition to pro-wrestling under the WWE banner.
With the WWE main roster featuring a mix of former independent wrestlers and athletes who took their first bumps with WWE, time has proven that the on-screen product is more exciting when stars come from different backgrounds, and are all able to contribute something different.
