WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels has opened up about his in-ring career, explaining why he prefers his work from the 2000s or the 1990s.
With Shawn Michaels wrestling for over twenty years, the current WWE Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative has reflected on the the run he considers to be the best of his career.
During an interview on 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, Shawn Michaels was asked which he believes was his best era, out of the 1990s or the 2000s.
Explaining that because he was in a much better place in the 2000s, he had a healthier relationship with wrestling then, Michaels replied:
“I’ll lean towards the 2000s. I know the 90s, from a professional standpoint, I would arguably say that I felt like I was better than a lot of people in the game then, but me personally, I was not in a great place.
“But in the 2000s, my work was so much better. As you become a more mature player, you understand momentum, picking your spots, being smarter with the game.
“I was able to do that in the 2000s, and also be able to enjoy it. That’s the thing that I didn’t do early in the 90s, allow myself to enjoy it, because I felt so much pressure.
“Majority of it I put on myself and felt like everybody was sort of coming after me, and you’re very defensive.
“The 2000s, I would easily say it was, certainly for me personally and professionally, a much better time, because I was in a much better place, with a family and children and all of that, it’s hard to beat that time for me.”

While many fans are nostalgic for the 1990s version of Shawn Michaels, Shawn Michaels wrestled a number of classic matches in the 2000s, including his WrestleMania 25 clash with The Undertaker in 2009, and his bouts with Chris Jericho in their celebrated feud in 2008.
Earlier on in the decade, Michaels won the first Elimination Chamber match, outlasting Triple H, Chris Jericho, Booker T, Rob Van Dam and Kane at Survivor Series 2002.
With the 1990s-era Michaels feeling more like the “classic” version, it’s easy to forget how great his run in the following decade was, but Michaels stating that he was actually in the right headspace to enjoy this era makes it even more fun to revisit.
