Randy Orton has commented on his new WWE partnership with Pat McAfee after the big reveal on last night’s SmackDown.
For a few weeks, Orton had been receiving phone calls from someone who had influenced him to turn heel and attack Cody Rhodes.
Last night on WWE SmackDown, the mystery phone caller was revealed to be Pat McAfee who had been away from WWE TV for a number of months after leaving his commentary position last year.
After the show, Orton has taken to social media to address their partnership, simply stating:
“For the business. @PatMcAfeeShow”
The belief right now is McAfee’s insertion into the Randy Orton vs Cody Rhodes storyline came as a direction from Endeavor and TKO management above WWE creative, namely CEO Ari Emanuel, who also represents McAfee.
The move is likely a reaction to the ticket sales for WrestleMania and business in general being down from last year for WWE, with McAfee a big name, especially on ESPN, which is something that can be used for more tie-ins and to gain interest on the network.
That’s actually part of the storyline as well, as Pat McAfee has brought up these facts and said Randy Orton is the one who can turn it all around if he becomes WWE Champion and face of the company.
WWE In Dangerous Territory With Celebrity Involvement
WWE is losing some goodwill with the fans at the moment due to the saturation of celebrity involvement on TV and especially on the way to WrestleMania.
After the Travis Scott last year, this year has seen the likes of IShowSpeed, Jelly Roll, Lil Yachty and now Pat McAfee involved in the Mania build-up.
WWE does need to very careful not do overdo things, and it seems like we’re approaching that point.
There even seems to be some frustration from within WWE towards TKO management for getting involved in storylines like Orton vs Rhodes.
