AEW star MJF has addressed missing out on a match with John Cena, after the 17-time world champion wrapped up his WWE career at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.
After 23 years of contributions to WWE inside the ring and out, John Cena wrapped up his career with a loss to GUNTHER in Washington D.C. at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.
Throughout Cena’s final 12 months in WWE he faced off with both rising stars and some of his most legendary rivals, but one name that was never on the table was MJF – a star that would have been high on many fans’ list of dream matches for the “Greatest of All Time” if MJF wasn’t contracted to AEW.
Speaking with Brandon Walker on Mostly Sports, MJF was asked whether he is “sad” that he never got the chance to wrestle Cena, to which he responded:
“Yes, absolutely. I think that there is a different world where that match would’ve happened. Unfortunately it’s not this one.
“I’ve had so many incredible run-ins with John where we’ve shot the s**t, he’s an incredible guy. He watches our product, he’s seen my stuff, he was very complimentary. Obviously I’m super complimentary to him.
“I’ve said it before in other interviews, but before CM Punk my favorite wrestler growing up was John Cena. He was a fathead on my wall in my bedroom. So I’d wake up, salute the OG and then get ready for school”.

After meeting at the premiere of movie The Iron Claw, Cena recalled his interaction with MJF back in 2024 and joked about wanting the AEW star to sign for WWE in the future.
MJF was also one of the many names throughout the wrestling industry to pay tribute to Cena after his final match two weeks ago.
