In the months since, Cena has noted that he was pitched the idea of the turn, but he has now opened on the turn, and revealed the only pitch he made for the segment.

Speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About?, Cena noted that the only pitch he made for the segment was for the cameras to linger on his for longer than planned.

He said:

“The 18 months, from announcing my retirement, is literally a chronicle of the cycle of life, it is an individual towards the end of their life announcing that hey, I’m gonna go.

“I really thought a lot about what I’ve been able to be lucky enough to be a part of here, and the change in demeanor when I kicked when I kicked you in the nuts was easy. I am known for smiling in the face of adversity, in the face of polarisation, taking it all in stride, not taking myself too seriously.

“Then you make this announcement, then you have a six month pause, then you have Jan 6 in Intuit where it’s like ‘alright, we’re gonna have some fun’ and then you have Rumble, and I come so close. Going into Rumble the story is just happy to be here, I wanna make out the year in one piece, and then I almost win, and I lose because of stupid confidence.

“I hit the mat not selling upright, looked back like ‘motherf**ker I almost had it’. Then I had the opportunity in the press conference to let people know that I’m serious, I’m goal focused, I wanna win (the WWE Title) again. I’ve changed my perspective, this is not a farewell handshake tour.

“Fast-forward to Elimination Chamber, I know this is forever the critical discussion outside of the confines of people who said ‘I want you to do this’ that own the thing. They wanted to make Elimination Chamber a moment. I get it, the business is about making moments, there’s nothing wrong with that. You don’t have to always have a nine month trajectory.

“You can understand that like ‘yo we got a ton of eyes on tonight, let’s do something impactful and then you as artists can run through the maze and figure it out’.

“In February they wanted to create a moment, and they asked me to be a part of it. What a challenge for me creatively. So the loss of that good side, at all costs, to get (the WWE Title) was easy to explain, and when we all talked about it, the one detail I made. I’ll do whatever the f**k you guys want, just stay on the face for longer than you think. That’s the one thing I said, it’s gonna feel weird, just stay.”
