Gunther has opened up on facing John Cena in his WWE retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December.
John Cena competed in his final WWE match back on December 13, where he faced off with Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington DC.
Gunther would end Cena’s career, submitting him with a Sleeper Hold and making the man who would ‘never give up’ give up.
Gunther Opens Up On John Cena WWE Retirement Match
Speaking on WWE Retrospective, Gunther reflected on his match with John Cena, and how the crowd reaction was the best thing for him and his career.
He said:
“Since there was the tournament before there wasn’t really a storyline for a few weeks, so I didn’t know him as a person or anything, but I didn’t question anything he did in terms of how it’s gonna go or something like that.
“It felt like being in the ring with somebody in his prime still. He might be more critical of himself when it comes to that than it really is because we are our own biggest critics.
“It’s funny in a wrestler’s career too because I remember when Cena was just shoved down everybody’s throat and everybody was like ‘I don’t want that guy’ and then after a while you go away and once you come back, everybody wants you. That’s just a natural thing in WWE, and I totally get why he had the career that he had and was always in the spot that he was.
“That night it totally switched for me because people were legit pissed off, they were really pissed off. Not like ‘we play along and boo you’, they were frustrated that this is how it ended, this was the best outcome for me. You hear the reaction after the tap out, that’s the biggest achievement too. The guy that said ‘never give up’, I can make him give up. That’s maybe worth more worth than any title you can win. For the rest of my career I can talk about that and it’s going to annoy people forever.
“When I grew up in the 90s I was never a WWE guy, and now being here and fitting in, and being the guy on screen that dumps on it, it’s a lot of fun to do.
“It felt tenser and heavier than WrestleMania did, and everybody was so emotionally involved backstage, and in the middle of it was me just enjoying that, being the emotional stone I am. I enjoyed that, it was a special night.”

Who Is Next To Be Retired By Gunther
With Gunther now the ‘Career Killer’, there is a lot of speculation about who could be next to be retired by Gunther in WWE.
With Gunther reaching a deal with Paul Heyman ahead of his match with Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 42, many believe the favor could end up being the chance to retire Brock Lesnar in his hometown of Minneapolis at SummerSlam in August.
Outside of Brock, a match between Gunther and Rey Mysterio was reportedly slated for WrestleMania prior to an injury to Rey, with Rey potentially having put his career on the line.
